What Is the International Baccalaureate Program?

graduation group

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, a rigorous academic program designed to prepare students to succeed at the college level and become global leaders, continues to grow in popularity among American and international schools. In the IB Diploma Programme, students aged 16-19 participate in a highly challenging series of courses and assessments that encourage them to think critically, raise questions, and develop a better understanding of themselves and others. Read on to learn more about how the IB Program works.

Key Components
Students who participate in the IB Diploma Programme examine the theory of knowledge, where they study and question their own learning. Another key component is experiential learning, which enables students to develop skills outside of the academic arena by participating in the arts and community service. The extended essay provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable critical thinking skills and a global perspective through the process of completing an independent research project.

The IB curriculum encompasses five main areas of study: Studies in Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, and Mathematics. Students are required to choose one subject from each of the five groups, as well as an additional subject from either the sixth area of study, Arts, or another from one of the five main areas.

In order to be awarded the IB Diploma, students must undergo a series of rigorous written examinations scored by external IB examiners. Students also complete assessments in their own schools, which are reviewed by teachers as well as external examiners. Scores for each assessment are awarded 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest), and students must earn at least 24 points in order to be awarded the IB Diploma.

AP vs. IB Classes
The International Baccalaureate Program owns distinct advantages over AP classes for preparing students to succeed academically in college. This distinction is made apparent when viewing the GPA drop for students between their first year of college and high school. IB students averaged a GPA decline from 3.8 to 3.3, while AP students GPA dropped from 3.9 to 3.1.

Tips for Selecting the Right College for You

Harvard Business School

A private college preparatory school will enable you to thrive at any institute of higher learning you choose to attend. However, it’s often difficult to decide which college is right for you. Begin the decision-making process by consulting your private school’s college counselor. In some cases, college preparatory schools require college counseling as early as freshman year. Your counselor will walk you through the college search process and discuss your options. Additionally, consider the following factors when choosing a school.

List Your Interests
Some students already have an idea of the type of career they’d like to pursue. If this describes you, look for a college that has a strong department in that area. Otherwise, think about your career goals in more general terms. Would you thrive in a liberal arts program or one geared toward mathematics and the sciences? Make a list of your interests and preferences and explore the websites of various schools to assess their academic curricula.

Consider College Size
As a student at a private school, you likely already understand the value of a small class size. You may wish to continue this type of academic experience by choosing a small, private college. Or, you might prefer a larger university that offers greater access to a multitude of disciplines.

Examine Activities and Sports
Although the academic curriculum of a college should carry more weight in your decision, it’s also a good idea to examine the school’s extracurricular activities and sports teams. Enrichment opportunities can enhance your college experience.

Schedule a Visit
Sign up for tours of college campuses to gain a more thorough understanding of the schools you’re considering. You’ll likely attend informational sessions, talk to current students, and you may even sit in on a class.

The Quarry Lane School offers extensive college counseling services beginning freshman year. We’re also conveniently located near approximately 30 colleges and universities. Exploring the Benefits of Private Schools

Graduation 27

Enrolling your children in a private school is an investment in their future successes. Private schools provide a nurturing and encouraging environment in which children can thrive and develop a love of learning. If you’re on the fence about enrolling your children, consider the following benefits.

Class Size
One of the most significant benefits of a private school is its smaller class size. Teachers work more closely with students and are able to provide more in-depth feedback and guidance. Since students in a small class do not need to compete for the teacher’s attention, they are generally more engaged in the curriculum. A smaller class size also lends itself to increased peer learning opportunities. Plus, active participation in a small class prepares children for college classes. The benefits of a small class size extend to behavioral issues. According to USA Today, researchers have found students in smaller classes are more focused and engage in fewer problem behaviors.

Challenging Curriculum
When you enroll your children in a private school, they will have access to a challenging curriculum that enables them to learn the value of hard work and dedication. The higher standards of private schools translate into higher test scores. Furthermore, successful completion of engaging and stimulating coursework fosters children’s confidence in their own abilities.

College Acceptance
Private schools often emphasize preparation for college and frequently boast high college acceptance rates. Children at private schools are more likely to achieve high SAT scores. Also, the rigorous academic standards at private schools help children thrive at institutes of higher learning.

Enrichment Opportunities
Private schools typically offer a much broader array of enrichment opportunities than public schools. Your children will have access to a wealth of student clubs and associations, athletic teams, and community service opportunities. Additionally, private schools often offer a wide selection of visual and performing arts classes, such as studio arts and theater arts.
