Investing in Mandarin Chinese Education for Your Children

With more native speakers in the world than any other language, Mandarin Chinese is continuing to gain recognition as an essential language. This fact, along with the growing awareness of China’s economic and social power, has prompted many parents to invest in Mandarin Chinese education for their children. Beginning the Application Process at Quarry Lane

Lower School

The application process at Quarry Lane School provides us with a comprehensive method of identifying and offering admission to the students whom we feel would thrive in our rigorous college preparatory environment. The general application process for admission to all grade levels is very similar.

Families interested in pursuing an application to the school should schedule a campus tour or attend a school Open House, which provides them with an opportunity to get acquainted with the school firsthand. The next step is to complete an application form and parent statement, and to submit a nonrefundable application and testing fee. Additionally, each application must include a copy of the student’s school records and teacher recommendations. The last part of the Quarry Lane application consists of an entrance examination and an interview, during which the applicant will shadow a Quarry Lane student for a day and then meet with a member of the Admissions Committee.

Mandarin Chinese: A World Language on the Rise

More and more adults are encouraging their children to study Mandarin Chinese at school and through other language immersion programs. Fueled by a desire to invest in their children’s futures, parents are taking note that Mandarin is the most popular first language in the world, beating out English by five million speakers. Mandarin is also the second most popular language on the Internet. Keep reading to learn more about the benefits of having your child learn Mandarin Chinese.

Early Language Learning
Most language programs begin at the middle school or high school level. Children who begin learning another language before adolescence, however, have the ability to acquire the language the same way they acquired their native tongue, as long as they have an immersion experience. In order for children to have a successful immersion experience, they must be immersed by a native speaker at least once a week for a significant period of time. Enrolling your child in a Mandarin Chinese program makes this possible.

Cognitive Advantage
There are many cognitive benefits to learning Mandarin. Children who learn a second language at a young age score higher on the SAT than those who don’t. Learning to write Chinese characters helps with the development of fine motor skills, and studying Mandarin stimulates unique parts of the brain because it is so distinct from English.

Preparation for the Future
As a major economic and cultural presence in the global marketplace, China has become a key player in the international business world. This has spurred many parents to promote the learning of Mandarin so that their children can be competitive when they enter the workforce. Enrolling your child in Mandarin language classes and immersion programs will help to prepare him or her to successfully navigate the increasingly globalized world.

Tips for Writing an Outstanding College Admissions Essay

Writing on Paper

Students who have excellent grades, test scores, and extracurricular activities are not guaranteed entrance to the nation’s top colleges. In fact, your college admissions essay can make or break your application. Here are some pointers for making your personal statement stand out.

Do Your Research
Sitting down to write can be challenging. Ease into the process of writing by reading some sample essays for inspiration. Read the essays of professional writers, as well, to get a sense of how they guide a reader toward meaning in artful ways.

Decide on a Theme
What makes you unique? Create a list of the qualities or experiences you’d like to showcase. If you’re lost, try asking friends or family members how they would describe you, and think about using a narrative that highlights your positive qualities. Create an outline to help you structure the essay before you begin writing. You should make sure that you don’t try to say too much. Writing about something specific in an interesting way is often much more meaningful and memorable than writing about a general topic.

Although they can seem intimidating, the members of the admissions committee who will read your essay are regular people who will enjoy a good story and have a sense of humor. If you focus too much on what you think they want to hear, you will likely end up writing something generic. Write in your own voice, and allow your personality to come through.

Write, and Then Rewrite
After you write your first draft, ask a trusted friend, relative, teacher, or counselor to look over your work. Make sure that your editor is both proofreading and giving you feedback on the content of your college admissions essay. During the revision process, try to make your essay as concise as possible and ensure that it is free of errors.

An education at a college preparatory school can give students an advantage in the college application process. For more information about preparing for college, contact The Quarry Lane School, a K-12 private school in Dublin, California. You can reach us at (925) 394-4644.
