The Benefits of Entering the Field of Engineering

Engineering Calculations

In spite of the sluggish economic recovery, careers and job opportunities in the field of engineering continue to hold steady, and even grow in a number of subfields. Due in part to the increasing number of individuals pursuing a career in engineering and the continued technology boom, programs at secondary and college preparatory schools that focus on science, technology, and engineering have exploded in popularity in recent years. Explore the benefits of entering the field of engineering, outlined below, and prepare to enjoy the rewarding possibilities that this field may bring.

Variety of Career Choices
There are many different types of engineering, and with each type comes a host of potential career options. Computer engineers may pursue careers in software design, digital forensics, or robotics, to name a few, while biomedical engineers may work in pharmaceuticals, veterinary medicine, or a number of other areas. Mechanical engineering offers a myriad of career options and has a variety of subfields, including architecture, alternative energies, and nanotechnology.

Creative and Challenging Thinking
Engineering is a great match for those with inquisitive, creative minds. Since there is typically no “right answer” in the field of engineering, engineers cultivate and hone their problem-solving skills by developing innovative, efficient solutions for complex tasks. Though engineers typically have an affinity for math, right-brained individuals tend to do quite well, too.

Opportunities to Positively Impact Society
From cleaning up the environment to creating new tools to enhance internet security, engineers are constantly developing and improving technologies that positively impact society. If you are interested in pursuing a line of work that offers hands-on opportunities to benefit the planet, then engineering may be a good fit for you.

What Is the International Baccalaureate Program?

graduation group

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Program, a rigorous academic program designed to prepare students to succeed at the college level and become global leaders, continues to grow in popularity among American and international schools. In the IB Diploma Programme, students aged 16-19 participate in a highly challenging series of courses and assessments that encourage them to think critically, raise questions, and develop a better understanding of themselves and others. Read on to learn more about how the IB Program works.

Key Components
Students who participate in the IB Diploma Programme examine the theory of knowledge, where they study and question their own learning. Another key component is experiential learning, which enables students to develop skills outside of the academic arena by participating in the arts and community service. The extended essay provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable critical thinking skills and a global perspective through the process of completing an independent research project.

Curriculum
The IB curriculum encompasses five main areas of study: Studies in Language and Literature, Language Acquisition, Individuals and Societies, Sciences, and Mathematics. Students are required to choose one subject from each of the five groups, as well as an additional subject from either the sixth area of study, Arts, or another from one of the five main areas.

Assessment
In order to be awarded the IB Diploma, students must undergo a series of rigorous written examinations scored by external IB examiners. Students also complete assessments in their own schools, which are reviewed by teachers as well as external examiners. Scores for each assessment are awarded 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest), and students must earn at least 24 points in order to be awarded the IB Diploma.

AP vs. IB Classes
The International Baccalaureate Program owns distinct advantages over AP classes for preparing students to succeed academically in college. This distinction is made apparent when viewing the GPA drop for students between their first year of college and high school. IB students averaged a GPA decline from 3.8 to 3.3, while AP students GPA dropped from 3.9 to 3.1.
